Sugar Heaven

Again, looking at my Food Bucket List, I wanted to attack something that always intimidated me but something warm and comforting as well. Cinnamon Rolls.
I grew up strictly enjoying the taste of cinnamon rolls via the Pillsbury tube. They were always delicious and indulgent but seeing those huge cinnamon rolls also left something to be desired.

I am totally intimidated by baking or cooking with yeast. It freaks me out! There is temperature and freshness and all sorts of things to think about. I feel like maybe, just maybe, I have actually conquered it though! I have proof....just see my fridge and freezer! Okay, on to the pictures.

I used the much talked about and applauded Pioneer Woman's recipe via RhodeyGirlTests. She divided the recipe in half which turned out to be so much more than enough. I substituted one cup of whole wheat pastry flour for one of the cups of all purpose flour and added in some walnuts to the filling. I also WAY overdid it on the cinnamon but I happen to love me some crazy cinnamon action so nothing too bad.

They turned out great AND I have some in the freezer in case I want some sugary goodness on a random Wednesday morning.
**Note: the wine bottle is there as a substitute rolling pin. I wasn't drinking and baking, no sir. Well, at least not this time!

  1. I've been using a wine bottle as a rolling pin forever, but thankfully the mother-in-law bought me a rolling pin for Christmas. I had a SatC moment (a la Miranda) when I opened it, but then squealed when I realized I'd moved up the ranks with kitchen gadgets.

Also, have you ever made monkey bread? It's another good recipe for practicing with yeast and oh-so-gooey and delicious! http://www.browneyedbaker.com/2010/08/27/monkey-bread-recipe/

  2. Yum! My grandma used to make the most amazing cinnamon rolls. They are so good when they’re made from scratch.

  3. Cara--yes, I have a fancy rolling pin back in Oregon and thought I totally packed it! The wine bottle is working well so far :)

I haven't made monkey bread but that recipe looks great!

Amy--huge difference when baked at home! I am so glad I can freeze them for later, too.

  4. I am intimidated by cinnamon rolls. Did you freeze them in dough form or already baked? I have Pioneer woman recipes saved (10 of them!) but haven't got to them. Way to go!

  5. I froze them already baked. I had to crazy Google it first to see the best way of going about it. I believe you can freeze in dough form as well though. I made the 1/2 recipe because it made so many! Don't be intimidated--it was actually really easy just a lot of waiting around for boiling then cooling then yeast to activate and rise.

  6. Okay good to know:) I am not afraid of yeast (anymore) but the whole rolling things out makes me have sugar cookie PTSD. I have issues with rolling things:) Maybe I will try it...might be too much for me. The string picture scared me too:)
